Mercy hospital’s chief clinical officer to retire after 39 years

James Tita, MD, chief clinical officer at Toledo, Ohio-based Mercy Health–St. Vincent Medical Center, is retiring after 39 years, The Toledo Blade reported March. 29.

Dr. Tita, a critical care physician and sleep specialist, began his career in 1986. As chief clinical officer of the Toledo market, he has overseen clinical operations across seven hospitals, outpatient facilities and emergency departments. He also helped launch the region’s first extracorporeal membrane oxygenation program, a life-saving procedure that provides temporary support to the heart and lungs during critical illness. 

Dr. Tita was one of the first to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in 2021 and did so during a televised news conference event, according to the report.

In retirement, Dr. Tita, 71, plans to continue teaching at University of Toledo (Ohio) College of Medicine and Athens-based Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, as well as continue mentoring young physicians.
